Located in downtown Artesia at 422 W. Main St., Suite 2, the Eddy County Office opened its doors in the Spring of 2007. Currently this branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters has three successful programs serving the needs of vulnerable children in Artesia and Carlsbad.
In the High School Lunch Buddies program, National Honor Society students who are high school juniors and seniors serve as Big Brothers or Big Sisters for elementary and middle school aged students who need a role model in their life. Once a week, the high school Bigs meet their Littles at the Little’s school during the lunch hour.
In a second Lunch Buddies program, adult volunteers from the community serve as a Bigs to Littles in grades K-12. These community Bigs also meet with their Littles during the Little’s school lunch time. Studies show that Littles who participate in our Lunch Buddies programs have a better attitude toward school, improve their grades and attendance, and get along better with their peers
In addition to our school programs we offer a community based program where the adult Bigs pick up their Littles at their home and spend about 4 or 5 hours a month doing activities together in the community.
On average in Artesia and surrounding communities, we now have about 30 children meeting with their Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Together with their unique perspectives and special friendships they are building a brighter future for Eddy County at-risk youth.
